MELASTI & NYEPI DAY March 21, 2015

Melasti Ceremony is conducted once a year in conjunction with the big Hindu Holiday called Nyepi Day or silent day. The Melasti event is performed few days before Nyepi day. At the Melasti celebration, all Hindu people in Bali troop to carry the holy symbol of Hindu religion to the sea to be cleaned and looked at the alongside road the parade of Umbul-umbul symbol and others. It is also accompanied by the gamelan traditional enliven this event.

Hari Raya Nyepi is the Balinese Hindu New Year. This ceremony is to remind us how important life is and this day serves to purify ourselves and the universe. It is celebrated on the first new moon after the Vernal Equinox. Melasti is a ceremony to purify Bhuana Alit (small world) and Bhuana Agung (the universe) from bad influences, bad deeds and bad thoughts.
Almost everything in Bali will shut down on March 21 for the Hindu festival of Nyepi. Many Balinese believe that if the whole island stays quiet at this time, visiting evil spirits will think no one is there.
